National Aboriginal Day

Our Annual National Aboriginal Day Celebrations are planned and implemented by the Youth Membership. It is a great opportunity for the youth to develop various skills including: leadership, organization, communication, and event plannign. The celebrations usually start with a Sunrise Ceremony at 6:00am followed by a traditional breakfast. The afternoon consists of a Family Fun Day where families are invited to come and participate in Northern Games, Traditional Crafts, and view the Dancing and Drumming group.

Conne River Powwow

The members of the Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centre have attended the Conne River Powwow for the past ten years. This trip allows youth to experience a Powwow which is a rare opportunity in this province. In recent years, youth have become comfortable enough with the culture to participate in the singing, dancing, and cultural ceremonies (such as the sweat lodge).

Culture Camps

For the past six years the Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centre has hosted a weekend Culture Camp for the youth membership. These camps offer youth the opportunity to socialize and make friends while learning about various aspects of the Aboriginal Cultures of the province. The camps involve teachings by Elders in the province as well as story-telling, Northern Games, demonstrations of Aboriginal Crafts, and Dancing and Drumming. These camps are developed around a central theme. Examples of past themes include: "Respecting our Elders"; and "Today's Youth, Tomorrow's Elders".

Mini Culture Camps

Each summer the youth membership takes a weekend camnping trip to a local campground just outside the city. These trips give youth the opportunity to work on their wilderness survival skills, swim, canoe, and hike.

Children's Christmas Party

Each year the St. John's Native Friendship Centre hosts an Annual Christmas party for its membership. A cold plate supper is served and Santa Claus makes a visit and delivers presents to children under the age of 13. It is a great opportunity for members to get together and socialize. In recent years, the youth have been responsible for planning and executing this event.
