The Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centre provides services and programs designed for and by the Aboriginal Youth of Metropolitan St. John’s. Cultural sensitivity and appropriate delivery of these services and programs are of great importance to our membership. Having a safe, warm, comfortable and familiar environment in which Youth can socialize dramatically eases the transition from rural to urban surroundings. The Centre provides Aboriginal Youth from the four prominent cultures (Innu, Inuit, Metis, and Mi’kmaq) and others, the opportunity to socialize, participate in cultural and other events, obtain peer counseling and assistance in their dealing with outside agencies. The Goals and Objectives of the Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centre
Who We ServeThere are approximately 3000 Aboriginal people in the greater St. John’s area. Most of theses individuals are Inuit, Innu, Mi’kmaq, or Metis, however some are from other nations elsewhere in Canada. The Youth Centre currently has an active membership of 106 youth. The Youth Centre also serves youth who are staying in the Shanawdithit Shelter which is attached to the Centre. Those youth are temporarily in St. John’s for health services or are making the transition to city life. |
